Social, Emotional and Mental Health

We recognise that some children have extra emotional and social needs that need to be developed and nurtured. These needs can manifest themselves in a number of ways, including behavioural difficulties, anxiousness, and being uncommunicative.

We have recently started the ‘Thrive’ approach in school whereby we can help children progress through any interruptions identified, to close gaps and progress to right-time development.

All classes follow a structured PSHE (Personal, Social, Health end Economic Education) curriculum to support this development. We are currently in the process of implementing a whole school THRIVE approach, to improve mental health and wellbeing of our children.

We offer:

  • Pastoral mentor support through Apollo;
  • Lunchtime and playtime support through planned activities and groups;
  • Access to 'Emotional Well Being' team and THRIVE practitioners;
  • Well-being and social skills groups;
  • Before and After school clubs to promote team work/building friendships etc.

At Newington, we have a dedicated team who meet weekly to discuss any child/family that may be struggling in school or at home and offer advice and support.

The School’s Welfare team includes:

  • Head teacher: Ms Hannah Tudor
  • Assistant Head teacher/Welfare Lead: Ms Robyn Harrison (January 2023)
  • Assistant Head teacher/SENCO: Mrs Suzanne Legge
  • Pastoral Mentor: Mrs Holly Dube
  • Pastoral Mentor/Safeguarding Officer : Ms Tracey Stillman
  • Medical Officer: Ms Sharon Robb
  • Attendance Officer: Ms Sarah Ayling

If you are experiencing any difficulties with your child at home, please do not hesitate to come into the school and meet with our Welfare Lead or the SENCO, who will be able to offer you access to the Early Intervention Process.
